Claflin Fountain Restoration
Buccacio Sculpture Services is honored to have played a central role in the restoration of the historic Claflin Fountain in Hopkinton, Massachusetts. Originally erected in 1907 in memory of Charles Winslow Claflin and Ann Maria Claflin, this cast iron and bronze fountain had fallen into disrepair over the years due to weathering and damage. Our comprehensive restoration efforts brought this treasured landmark back to life, culminating in its re-dedication during Hopkinton’s 300th Anniversary celebrations.

The Claflin Fountain, a centerpiece of Hopkinton’s Town Common, had suffered significant wear and loss over its long history. Some of its original features, including the top basin and fountain head, had been removed or damaged during a hurricane. Weathering had left much of the cast iron and bronze ornamentation eroded, and the internal water system was no longer functional. Buccacio Sculpture Services was tasked with restoring this historic monument to its former glory while preserving its original charm and character.

Disassembly and Restoration Process
Our restoration process began with the careful disassembly of the fountain on-site in the Town Common. Each component was meticulously cataloged and transported to our foundry for restoration work. Missing and damaged pieces were recreated using archival photographs and reference materials. Hand-sculpted plaster patterns and turned forms were crafted to replicate the original artwork.
The missing top basin and the fountain head, where the water originally spouted, were custom-sculpted by Jeff Buccacio to match the fountain’s historical design. These pieces were cast in bronze, ensuring durability and accuracy, and seamlessly integrated into the restored structure.
Enhancing Functionality
To restore the fountain’s water flow, the entire pump system was replaced with a modern, durable system that would support continuous operation while maintaining the fountain’s historical integrity. This upgrade ensures that the fountain will remain a functional and beautiful feature for years to come.

A Complementary English Garden Design
As part of the project, Buccacio Sculpture Services designed and implemented a new English Garden landscape surrounding the fountain. The lush greenery and carefully selected plantings enhance the fountain’s visual impact and create a serene, inviting environment for visitors to enjoy.
