General Edward O. Gourdin and African American Veterans Memorial
Buccacio Sculpture Services is honored to have created a lasting tribute to General Edward O. Gourdin, a distinguished figure in American history and a symbol of African American excellence in military service, sports, and justice. Located in Roxbury, Massachusetts, this 7-foot bronze monument not only commemorates General Gourdin’s remarkable achievements but also serves as a broader tribute to the valor and sacrifices of African American veterans throughout the nation’s history.
Crafting a Monument of Distinction
The creation of the General Gourdin Memorial began with a small gestural maquette, designed to capture the essence of his dignified presence and heroic stance. From this initial concept, our team moved on to sculpting the full 7-foot statue with meticulous attention to detail. A life-sized armature was constructed as the foundation for the clay sculpture, onto which layers of clay were applied to shape the figure.
Every detail of the sculpture, including General Gourdin’s proper uniform, medals, and likeness, was carefully crafted and reviewed. Collaborating closely with his family and the memorial committee, we ensured that every element authentically represented his legacy. Their invaluable input guided the refinement process, resulting in a statue that not only honored his achievements but also captured his spirit. Once approved, the sculpture moved on to the next stage in the monument process, where it was prepared for moldmaking and casting.

From Clay to Bronze: A Seamless Process
Once the full-size clay model was completed, we moved into the moldmaking phase, preparing the sculpture for casting. Using traditional sandcasting techniques at our foundry, we cast the statue in bronze, ensuring a finish that would stand the test of time. In addition to the statue, Buccacio Sculpture Services also produced a series of surrounding bronze plaques. These plaques, installed around the base of the monument, honor the contributions of African American veterans from various conflicts, providing a broader historical context and connecting the memorial to the shared legacy of military service.
Installation and Dedication
The installation of the monument was a carefully coordinated effort, involving the placement of the bronze statue on a custom-designed granite stone base. The surrounding area features engraved plaques that narrate the achievements of African American soldiers across ten different wars, creating a space of reflection and remembrance. Our team oversaw every aspect of the installation, ensuring a seamless integration of the statue and plaques within the park setting.
The unveiling ceremony was a powerful and emotional event, attended by veterans, local leaders, and members of the community. It was a day of pride and reflection, as the crowd gathered to honor the life and legacy of General Gourdin, as well as the countless African American soldiers who have fought bravely throughout U.S. history.

Celebrating a Multifaceted Legacy
General Gourdin was a true Renaissance man. Born in Florida in 1897, he moved to Boston, where he made significant contributions in multiple fields. As an athlete, he became the first person in history to break the 25-foot barrier in the long jump, setting a world record in 1921. Gourdin went on to win a silver medal at the 1924 Paris Olympics, representing the United States with pride. After his athletic career, he served with distinction in World War II, rising to the rank of Brigadier General — one of the first African Americans to achieve this rank in the U.S. Army. Beyond his military service, Gourdin made history again as a pioneering judge, becoming the first African American appointed to the Massachusetts Superior Court. His life was a testament to perseverance, excellence, and leadership across multiple domains.
