Honoring Spencer, the Beloved Marathon Dog

Buccacio Sculpture Services is proud to have played a key role in memorializing Spencer, the cherished golden retriever who captured the hearts of Boston Marathon participants and fans alike. Known for his endearing presence and uplifting spirit, Spencer became a symbol of encouragement and resilience along the marathon route. Every year, he could be seen standing in his favorite spot near Ashland State Park, holding a “Boston Strong” flag in his mouth. Alongside his sister, Penny, Spencer offered comfort and joy to runners, becoming a beloved fixture in the marathon’s history.

Crafting Spencer’s Legacy in Bronze

The journey to memorialize Spencer began with the creation of a detailed maquette, a small-scale clay model designed to capture his personality and iconic pose. Once the maquette received approval from Spencer’s family, we 3D scanned the model and produced a resin-printed version to ensure every detail was meticulously preserved. Following this, our team used advanced milling technology to enlarge the sculpture to a larger-than-life size. The foam base created by the mill was carefully skimmed with clay, allowing our artisans to refine the surface and execute the intricate details that brought Spencer’s unique characteristics to life.
To cast the sculpture in bronze, we utilized a combination of traditional and modern techniques, including lost-wax casting, sandcasting, and standard investment casting. These methods ensured that every nuance of the design was faithfully transferred to the final bronze piece. Once cast, the individual components were skillfully fabricated and finished with a custom patina, giving the statue its timeless appearance.
In addition to the sculpture itself, Buccacio Sculpture Services designed the bronze plaque installed beneath Spencer. This plaque shares his story, celebrating his impact as a symbol of hope and joy along the Boston Marathon route. Every element of the project, from the sculpture to the plaque, was crafted with care and dedication to ensure Spencer’s legacy would endure for generations to come.

A Lasting Tribute at Spencer’s Favorite Spot

The completed bronze statue was installed on a polished granite base at the very spot where Spencer had greeted runners for so many years. This location, chosen with care, holds special significance as it was Spencer’s favorite place to sit and offer his silent encouragement. The installation includes a commemorative plaque that shares Spencer’s story, highlighting his impact as a beloved therapy dog and an icon of the Boston Marathon.

The unveiling ceremony was a heartfelt moment, drawing fans, local residents, and marathon enthusiasts who had been touched by Spencer’s legacy. Many shared stories of how seeing Spencer along the route had lifted their spirits and given them the strength to continue. The statue now stands as a gathering point for reflection and inspiration, serving as a reminder of the profound connection between a community and its four-legged hero.
